Cardiology
Interventional Cardiology is a branch which deals with catheter-based treatment of structural heart diseases in adults and young adults.
Cardiology is the branch of medicine dealing with disorders of the heart. It includes medical diagnosis and treatment of congenital heart defects, coronary artery disease, heart failure, valvular heart disease and electrophysiology. Physicians who specialize in this field of medicine are called cardiologists, a specialty of internal medicine.
At Universal Hospital our team of experienced Cardiologists with world class equipment provide the best care for you heart and its problems. Ischaemic Heart Disease (IHD) or "Chest Pain" as it is colloquially known is a leading cause of morbidity and mortality the world over and its incidence is growing with the increasing changes in stress and lifestyle of the population.
If you get breathless or get chest pain when you walk or undertake any exertion it is recommended that you get yourself evaluated to rule out heart disease, especially if you are overweight, smoke, have Diabetes or high blood pressure.
Here we have all the possible evaluation modalities like Treadmill Test (TMT) or Stress Test, Pharmacological Stress Test, Echocardiography, Coronary Angiography, CT Angiography, Calcium Scoring on CT Scan, etc.
Milder cases of IHD can be managed with medication for a long time, but in some cases the coronary arteries supplying blood to the heart are blocked beyond a certain threshold and the artery needs to be "opened" and a stent put in to keep it open. This part of cardiology is called Interventional Cardiology.
Interventional Cardiology is a branch which deals with catheter-based treatment of structural heart diseases in adults and young adults. A catheter (thin, hollow tube) is inserted through a small cut in your groin or wrist. The catheter is guided through the aorta (the main artery of the body) into the blocked artery in the heart. This approach is widely-sought due to several advantages including the easy control of bleeding, a high level of comfort (our guests are capable of sitting up and walking immediately following the procedure), and minimal scars and/or pain.
In case of an Acute Myocardial Infarction (Heart Attack) it is essential to open up the artery that is blocked as early as possible to save as much of the heart muscle as possible. An Angioplasty (putting a stent in the artery to keep it open) can be done while the person is having a heart attack. This is called a Primary Angioplasty which is now the gold standard of care for an Acute Myocardial Infarction.
Apart from that, a large number of procedures are also performed here, including: . Diagnosis of congenital heart abnormalities . Aortic Aneurysms . Closure of Atrial Septal Defects . Heart Catheterizations . Interventional Coronary Procedures . Balloon support for patients with heart failure . All aspects of General and Interventional Cardiology
The Department comprises of brilliant Physicians with years of experience, along with a medical support team who use a collaborative approach to plan the appropriate therapy in consultation with each other. Together, they determine the most beneficial patient care therapy, which in turn, boosts the post-surgical and procedural outcomes.
